Every sailor would vouch for the fact that knowing how to tie knots is the most important factor of all in sailing and must be learned beforehand. Here are a few basic knots which will make your first sailing experience better.
In need of a loop around the sail pole or the mast, use a bowline at the end of two different ropes to tie them together. This type of knot is called a bowline and is considered the very basic of all. To tie your sailboat on the dock, a knot called cleat hitch would be appropriate wherein you can tie the anchor rope to a bow cleat or the dock lines of the boat can be tied to the cleats on the dock.
A clove hitch is a type of knot used to tie a line around a tube like or cylindrical structure. Quickest of all to tie it can be used to hang fenders or tie a dock line to a piling. A square knot can tie two ropes of equal length together in a loop around something.
Reef knot is quite similar to the square knot with the difference being that it can be untied a little quickly that the square knot and can be used for different temporary tying purposes such as tying a mainsail around the boom or mast. A stop knot doesn’t require much of practice and is simply a knot at either ends of a rope to prevent something like life boat or other equipment to go away while in the waters.
